The Paintings from the Church of Santa Maria in Taüll

The other remarkable mural group from the Boí Valley is that from the church of Santa Maria in Taüll (consecrated, like that of Sant Climent, in 1123), of which most of its interior decoration is preserved. It develops an extensive iconographic programme, presided over by an Epiphany scene on the central apse. Some fragments of the paintings from the south and west walls are also preserved, as well as some architectural features that once separated the nave from the aisles. One of the most characteristic themes is that of the Last Judgment, which occupied the west wall, in accordance with Byzantine and Italian models. If we take into account the differences in style and quality between the central apse, the south apse and the perimetral walls, it seems clear that several painters worked together on the paintings of Santa Maria, some of whom are linked to the paintings from the church of Sant Climent.
