Introduction

The Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia (GNC) conserves the most important public collection of coins, medals and valuable paper from Catalonia, with a total of 130,000 examples. The numismatic holding comprises piees from the 6th century BC to the present day. The medal collection comprises 7,800 pieces, the earliest examples struck in Italy in the fifteenth century up to nowadays. The valuable paper collection brings together banknotes, bonds and credit vouchers, and different types of credit documents sucha as shares, debentures and cheques. The Cabinet also houses different objects related to the monetary manufacture or paramonetary uses.

The most relevant holding in the GNC comprises pieces from Catalonia and the neighbouring territories, and also pieces from the main numismatic series. The visitor can appreciate the richness of these materials through twenty-seven moographic display cabinets, which make up the permanent exhibition of numismatics. This gallery shows an itinerary through the history of coinage in Catalonia, from the first Greek issues of Empúries and Roses to the euro and the predominant use of payment cards. The exhibition of several exceptional monetary treasures from all periods is noteworthy.

Other numismatics series, and especially medal series, are integrated in the general museographic discourse of the Museum. In this way, they can be seen from the Romanesque art galleries up to the 19th and 20th- century art galleries. A selection of medals stands out in these galleries, enabling the visitor to follow the evolution of this art in Europe and especially in Catalonia.
