Modernista Decorative and Industrial Arts

Fin-de-siècle Barcelona had become the key nucleus of the Iberian Peninsula and the Modernista capital par excellence. This was a time of constructional effervescence and eminent professionals, including the exceptional interior decorators Francesc Vidal, Gaspar Homar and Joan Busquets, and the architects Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, who made significant contributions to the field of interior and industrial design, as illustrated by the ensembles from the Manzana de la Discordia ['Block' or 'Apple of Discord']: the Batlló, Amatller and Lleó Morera Houses, respectively. All these creations welcomed a number of cabinetmakers, blacksmiths and sculptors, who succeeded in creating highly refined interiors. The section is competed by objects d'art such as Lluís Masriera's jewels and ceramic pieces by Lambert Escaler and Antoni Serra. These creations invoke fin-de-siècle atmosphere, which in turn reflects burgeois economic strength.
